Connie Deming in Concert
June 23 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
“The Thing with Feathers”
Unity Church of Greater Rochester, in partnership with AutismUp.org, is pleased to present our second concert with a very special guest performer, Connie Deming. Connie is a celebrated singer-songwriter, dubbed by Rochester music writer Jeff Spevak as “the best pure singer in the city.” Noted for her versatility, warmth and charm, she has delighted audiences in New England and here in the Rochester area for many years.
A featured artist on WXXI television’s OnStage concert series, Connie has recently completed her 8th recording of original material, “Fly,” her second project recorded in Dingle, Ireland with acclaimed guitarist Gerry O’Beirne. Mother of a young man with autism, Connie captivates hearts in a uniquely deep way with her stories and exquisitely crafted songs.
Connie notes, “I grew up with the thrill of hearing my mother play Chopin and Debussy on her beautiful Steinway piano, secretly singing to Bernstein recordings when everyone left the house, working out piano arrangements for myself; as a teenager, I loved picking out Joni Mitchell tunings and Beatles songs on the guitar; joined musical theater groups in high school and college; toured Europe with an all New England State College choir in 1969. When my son was born in 1985, I began to write my own songs.”
Connie has performed her own original songs at several Autism conferences and stages on TV and radio shows. Mother of a young man with autism, Connie captivates hearts in a uniquely deep way with her stories and exquisitely crafted songs. She has played special concerts at various wonderful venues around Rochester and performed a Joni Mitchell tribute at the Smith Opera House in Geneva.
“I’m grateful for this opportunity to create a new show for Unity — songs and stories from defining moments of my life. At age 70, it feels surprisingly like a rich journey that created this tapestry. I’m calling it ‘The Thing With Feathers’ after the Emily Dickinson poem, because my autistic son’s most urgent message was a plea for hope.”
Hope is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all
